What to bring bike packing

From an overnighter to week long adventure, this will have you covered.

Shelter pick one:

  • Bivvy – lightweight and easy set up
  • Tent – the comfortable option
  • Hammock – make suer your route has plenty of trees
  • Tarp shelter – lightweight and easy set up

IMO always bring an emergency bivvy – has saved me more than once

Sleeping essentials:

  • Sleeping bag or quilt (suited to your climate)
  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Inflatable sleep mat or closed-cell foam mat
  • Inflatable pillow
  • Ear plugs

Equipment

  • Gas burner stove or Trangia alcohol burner stove
  • Small pot/ pan set
  • Steel or enamel mug
  • Small tea towel
  • Chopping board (cut to fit inside pot/ pan)
  • Spork and knife
  • Small tube of olive oil and spices
  • Small scrubber and detergent
  • Matches for fire

Food and water

  • Backcountry cuisine meals per day OR fresh meal
  • Riding snacks for every 1 – 2 hours
  • 3L+ capacity to store water
  • Lifestraw or water purification tablets

Australian summer

  • Shirts per 2-3 days of riding – button up shirts are handy in the heat
  • Riding shorts per week of riding
  • Bib knicks – need to be washed almost daily 
  • Summer arm sleeves
  • Pair of socks per day
  • Gloves
  • PJ’s and camp clothes – lightweight

Winter

  • Shirts per 3-4 days of riding
  • Riding shorts per week of riding
  • Bib knicks – need to be washed frequently
  • Winter arm and leg warmers
  • Pair of socks per day

  • Thermal base layer
  • Long sleeve jacket
